Each year, more than 100,000 people hike this stunning track, seeing other-worldly landscapes such as the Emerald Lakes, massive craters and ancient lava formations.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is rated as the best one day trek in New Zealand and listed by many in the top 10 day treks in the world. It is a full-day (allow at least 8 hours) hike across 17 kilometres of mountainous terrain. The trail climbs to heights of 1900 metres above sea level. A reasonable level of fitness is a must and strong hiking boots are necessary. You should also be prepared for changeable alpine weather by packing warm clothing, gloves etc.
As much as the Tongariro Crossing is a challenge, it is also an unforgettable, life-affirming experience. You'll tread over the slopes of two active volcanoes - Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro, seeing some of the most breath-taking scenery of your life.
As weather conditions need to be assessed on the day we would advise you make booking arrangements from the lodge. We can assist you in organising transport to and from the track.
